While removing a railroad tie retaining wall this past week, we found a few termites between a couple of the layers. They were small in number but they did creep us out. In talking to a termite company they told us that by removing the wall we were removing their food and that they would soon attack our house. Our house is well built and we have recently done quite abit of remodeling (bathroom, finished basement), and in tearing out floors and old walls saw no sign of any insect whatsoever. We have a fairly dry basement, though we do run a dehumidifier for a few hours every day. We are going to be doing another bathroom in June and are curious to see if we see anything in those walls as they face the side where the retaining wall is located. Over the phone this company urgently recommended a termite bait treatment that would cost us upwards from $1500. They also told us they could not tell us if there were any termites in the house or headed for our house, but that their system would guarantee that termites would not attack our house. Somehow this just doesn't make sense to me and I wonder if I'm missing some key points about termite infestation...is their method of baiting where there are no present signs of termites considered preventive termite control; will those little guys actually go for the house now that the retaining wall is coming down or will they search for another wet source of wood? The side of our property where the retaining wall stands abuts a neighbor who had a long standing water problem in their backyard, which was finally rectified by new owners this past year. Putting bait traps around our house seems to me to be asking for trouble. I guess I don't appreciate what seems to me a scare tactic that could cost us a lot of money, when it all seems based on ifs...is this company's approach sound?
